Jaguars Term 1 2017-18

Welcome to Jaguars 2017 – 2018, we’re back! We started off the year thinking about our Rights and Responsibilities and learning about the ‘UN Convention on the Rights of the Child’. We read all the ‘Articles’ and chose the ones that we thought were particularly important to us. After that, we discussed what Jaguars would agree to do, and what adults who work with us would agree to do.

Our topic in Terms 1 & 2 is World War Two, and we started by finding out about the 1930s. In English, we have been writing about the Jarrow Crusade. We all took on the character of a real Crusader and wrote about how he would have felt, marching the 280 miles to London from Jarrow. We all agreed that we wouldn’t like to have done it, it must have been exhausting, what sore feet they must have had at the end of it! Read some examples of our work in the photos below.

Have you read the poem ‘The Magic Box’ by Kit Wright ? We wrote our own versions of the poem. Read some examples of our poems in the photos below.

On European Day of Languages, we studied Italy. We learnt some Italian and tasted some Italian food, it was delicious!

Mr. Ash has been teaching us Lacrosse this term. We have thoroughly enjoyed our outdoor PE sessions and both Mr. Ash and Mrs. Coate have been impressed with our developing Lacrosse skills and our teamwork.

On 3rd October, we visited the Coleshill Estate near Highworth to find out about the men who secretly trained there as Auxiliars during WW2. We did lots of interesting activities like cracking codes, visiting an underground Operational Base and scrambling through camouflage netting. We found it fascinating that the Postmistress of Highworth Post Office, Mrs. Mabel Stranks, played such an important part along with Norman, the boy who roller skated down to Coleshill to tell them to expect a new recruit!

On 12th October, we had our Harvest Festival. In the afternoon, Year 6 visited James Wilks House to deliver Harvest produce. We always enjoy visiting our friends at James Wilks and are looking forward to performing our Christmas concert for them in December.

To finish off the term, we shared our WW2 Pick and Mix homework with each other and family and friends. See some of our homework below. We hope you have enjoyed reading all about what we have been up to!
