Otters Class Term 2 2017-18

Wow what a busy term we have had! In Term 2, Otter Class continued to discover more about space and we started the term off with a fantastic theme day where the children found out what it would be like to be an astronaut. They took part in agility and accuracy tests, acted out scenarios and carried out experiments. After they had gone through their training, they blasted off to Mars in a rocket. It was a fantastic day and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

In English, we have written explanations about how the seasons occur. We have also written persuasive letters to NASA to apply to become astronauts. The children have all proved that they have the necessary skills and I think there are some future space explorers and scientists amongst us. We finished off the term by writing portal stories where the main characters travelled through a portal and found themselves on an alien planet. What amazing imaginations we have!

In Science, we learned about air resistance and gravity. Using bin bags and string, the children made parachutes and tested out how the surface area of a parachute can affect the amount of air resistance.
During the term, the children have enjoyed practising a range of PE skills with the help of Miss Cox from Premier sports. It was great to see them make so much progress and develop new skills.
In computing, with the help of the e- cadets, we have learnt more about safety. We also used Purple Mash to make a comic strip about meeting an alien.

We finished off a fabulous topic by visiting @Bristol where we experienced the solar system in 3D during our session in the planetarium. It was a fantastic trip, the children learnt a lot from the interactive activities and they behaved really well. I think many of them would like to go back for a second visit – a big thank you to all the adults who accompanied us and to parents for supporting us.
As well as all the space related learning that has gone on, let us not forget that we also had the big build up to Christmas!

We made Christmas cards, calendars and put in a lot of work towards the carol concerts. It was a shame that we had to change our plans at the last minute because of the weather but the children performed brilliantly despite the added excitement provided by the snow. The term ended with a successful Christmas disco and the children enjoyed the pantomime – Jack and the Beanstalk (Oh no they didn’t! Oh yes they did!)

I hope everyone had a brilliant Christmas holiday and is ready for the year ahead.
