We hope everyone had a lovely summer break and managed to enjoy a little bit of sunshine!
Squirrels class has 2 teachers; Mrs Johnson who will be in class Monday and Tuesday and Mrs Cantillon who is in Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Mrs Cantillon is new to Haydon Wick this year as is our teaching assistant Mrs Lewis. So this term is an exciting start for everyone!
We are all looking forward to getting to know everyone and to the year ahead.
We have lots of fun things planned for the coming term. Our new topic is ‘From Seed to Table’ and we are very excited about getting green fingers and having a go at growing some winter vegetables. We will be looking at the food we eat and thinking about where it has come from. We will also be learning about food chains and even plan to look at owl pellets to see if we can find out what they have eaten – get ready for some bones! We plan to have a visit from some bees and find out how they help growth in our local area. We are also looking forward to using our imaginations to invent some crazy insect superheroes after reading the story ‘Superworm’!
This term PE is planned for Mondays and Thursdays and so it is essential that PE kits are in school for both days. To be honest, it’s very helpful if it is in everyday just in case we have to change plans. After Christmas a PE day will change as we will be having some lessons from Premier Sports on Wednesdays. PE kits should include: shorts, PE shirt, daps OR trainers and jogging bottoms in colder weather. Please could this and any clothes be clearly named so we are able to return any lost property.
This year, we are again using a creative approach to home learning to give the pupils an opportunity to choose what interests them. We hope that it will also provide some activities that pupils and parents may enjoy working on together. In addition to the essential daily reading and spelling practice, we will provide you with 7 different tasks to complete across the term. These are varied and cover a range of subjects and we encourage your child to complete 2/3 of these tasks. You may produce your home learning in any way you wish and spend as much time on it as you wish. Once the homework is set we will let you know the date it needs to be handed in. Of course, we encourage you to present your work as well as possible. You have lots of time for this, so spread the tasks out. We look forward to seeing all the wonderful work you produce!
Children are encouraged to bring in a water bottle with a ‘sports’ top so they can keep hydrated throughout the day. It should come in every morning with fresh water (sorry no juice) to be kept in a tray in the classroom. This way the children can access their drink without having to leave the room and missing learning time. The water fountain is available during break times.
We need to point out that our cloakroom is very small and is actually used by more than 50 children as we share it with some of Year 3. Therefore to help all the children and to develop age-appropriate independence, we kindly ask that parents please say goodbye in the playground and let children come into school on their own. However we are always in the classroom so if anyone needs to talk to either of us or if you need to pass on any messages just come through. We will usually be available briefly in the morning or after school for 10-15 mins, if you need more time then please make an appointment. The door is always open!
We would greatly appreciate any help from parents/carers who fancy getting involved at any time, as well as parent volunteers to come on our visits or trips, you just need to let us know if you are available and then we can organise a time. We will always find a fun job for you to do and promise it’s not always messy!!
Once again welcome to everyone and if you have any queries feel free to ask.
Mrs Emily Johnson & Mrs Jo Cantillon
