Term 4 2016-17

In terms 3-4 our topic focus has been history, starting with a study of life in Tudor times and moving on to learning about the Great Fire of London.

A highlight of the time was our trip to Tewkesbury, where we explored some very cold Tudor buildings in company with their Tudor inhabitants; we played with Tudor toys and games and we met a rather scary Tudor barber surgeon who carried out various ‘operations’ on some of us.

Back in school we had fun handling and describing a range of Tudor objects. Our homework included trying some Tudor cooking so as children were kind enough to share what they had made we enjoyed foods like marchpane, dried apples with honey, hard tack and gingered bread.

As part of our science work we found out that we should eat only a small amount of foods high in sugar or fat. We worked out our own method of finding out which foods are high in fat even if you don’t have the labelling on the packet.

World Book day was a fantastic experience, when we enjoyed the story telling session organised by Swindon Library Service with the wonderful John Kirk. Roald Dahl’s ‘The Twits’ will never be the same again.

Hedgehogs class has shown great generosity this spring in supporting many causes including Mrs Bulley’s work with a Kenyan school, Red Nose Day cakes sale and, most recently, the UNICEF Day for Change copper trail. We got a very good view of the lettering covered in coins right outside our window. Thank you to all who contributed.

The children enjoyed learning about the Great Fire of London and showed in evidence in some brilliant poems and non-fiction books. The climax of the experience was making ‘timber framed’ houses out of cardboard, paper and straw and then setting light to them under the supervision of Miss Jennings, our Forest Schools leader.

After burning London down, we celebrated with games such as Oranges and Lemons and Musical Carts.

Next term we are looking forward to a new topic, finding out about AFRICA!
