Sport Premium

The government is provides additional funding to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding – provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – will be allocated to primary school headteachers. This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.
Eligible schools Funding for schools will be calculated by reference to the number of primary-aged pupils (between the ages of 5 and 11), as recorded in the annual schools census in January 2015.
Purpose of funding Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.
Possible uses for the funding might include:

  • hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE
  • supporting and engaging the least active children through new or additional Change4Life clubs
  • paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
  • providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport
  • running sport competitions, or increasing pupils’ participation in the School Games
  • buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE and sport
  • providing places for pupils on after school sports clubs and holiday clubs
  • pooling the additional funding with that of other local schools.

How will Haydon Wick Primary School Allocate the Funding?

We have already allocated the majority of the funding to employ our PE Specialist which costs the school £8600. They will be teaching all classes and providing professional development for teachers.

In addition to the PE Specialist, we use the remaining £565 to subsidise swimming and visiting coaches in term 6 during our fun fitness week, where we provide the children with taster sessions of street dance, skipping, archery, golf and zumba. We also take children to sports competitions so they can have a chance to compete with others.

So at Haydon Wick we...

  • Continue and further develop the many sporting enrichment opportunities we offer out of school hours for all the children
  • Continue and further develop competitive sports with our school teams
  • Have a PE focus week in term 6 where we invite other PE specialists to give our children sessions to experience a wide range of sport, e.g. lacrosse, zumba, tennis skipping
  • Update our Healthy School Status
  • Raise the profile of PE and healthy living in lessons and assemblies
