Otters Class Term 1 2017-18

What a lovely start to a school year! The children have settled into their new class, and some new friendships have been made. In the first week of term, we discussed our rights and responsibilities as part of Otter Class and as members of the Haydon Wick team.

We decided that to be able to learn and have fun, we should respect each other and help each other to feel safe. As a whole school, we understand the importance of ‘Rights and Respecting’ and each class has created a class charter.

Our topic this term has been ‘Earth and Space’ and at the beginning of the term, the children were actively involved in planning activities to support their learning. We drew mind maps to find out what we already know and came up with a list of activities and questions which we would like to answer before the end of the topic.

During the term, we have found out about the planets, discovered why there are different time zones around the world and we have explained why the Sun appears to move around the Earth.

Other activities have included: creating pictures in the style of space artist Peter Thorpe, writing recounts about Tim Peake, and writing poems based on ‘The Planet Gods’. The children were very proud of their kennings and calligrams. We are enjoying the book ‘Cosmic’ in Guided Reading and hopefully we will have time to finish it before the end of next term.

In PE, with the help of Premier Sports, we have been learning how to play Lacrosse. The children have really enjoyed the competitive nature of the game. For inside PE, we have been doing yoga.

We now use a fully cursive handwriting style. Otter class have risen to the challenge and try to use beautiful joined writing in all subject areas. They are all very keen to obtain their pen licence and quite a few children were awarded their licences at the end of the term.

We finished the term with an open evening to celebrate the fabulous homework the children have produced. It was lovely to see so many parents and we were all impressed with the standard of the projects.

Well done for a fabulous term – the next one should be amazing as we have our space day and our trip to look forward to!
