Haydon Wick Primary School For Parents

Hedgehogs (Year 2/3)

Hello and a warm welcome from Mrs Adams

We are a class of Year 2 and Year 3 children. The class teacher is Mrs Adams and the teaching assistants are Mrs Bulley (Monday to Thursday mornings) and Miss Kent (Friday mornings).

Topics we will be covering this year

  • Term 1-2 – The Great Plant and Animal Hunt
  • Term 3 – Tudors
  • Term 4 –The Great Fire of London
  • Term 5-6 – India

Reading starts in term 1, week 1. Other homework starts gradually but is fully in place by the end of term 1.

Please read school reading book 4-7 times a week to an adult please.

There will be spellings to learn most weeks, tested on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays (flexible days due to temporary timetable and staff changes). The words to learn should be at the front of the spelling book, with the tests at the back.

Number bonds or times tables to learn, tested on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays (flexible days due to temporary timetable and staff changes). The children will be tested on their most recent set of number bonds/times tables on a sticker inside mental maths book.

Activelearn online games

We use online games linked to the teaching in school. Access can be from any computer, including public libraries, but may not be possible on all tablets. Please use Google Chrome or Firefox. Internet explorer does not support the site.

The children will play games which earn points. They can spend their points on activities within the site. Last year’s class really enjoyed it.

The homework is usually given at the end of the week. Children can play the games as often as they want. They do not have to complete their task in a single sitting, but they can earn cubes for their table in class by keeping up with the games, so the more they complete, the better.

Your child will need to log in at: www.activelearnprimary.co.uk

Log in details will be given once the homework starts to be allocated.

Pick and Mix Homework

In addition to the essential homework listed above, pick and mix homework is given near the beginning of each term, with a choice of activities. Children should do at least one activity and can do as many as they like.

Pick and mix homework should be brought into school on the date given on the homework sheet and parents and carers are welcome into the class room at the end of that day to see what the children have done. Pick and mix homework sheets will be sent home and can be accessed on the Class Updates page.

What will you need in Hedgehogs class?

Your child will need this every day so they can change their book if it is finished and in case it is their turn to read.

Water and Snack

  • All children should bring a water bottle to school. They should take it home each day to wash it and refill it.
  • At morning break Year 2 children have a snack of fruit or vegetable as provided by the government.
  • Year 3 children may bring a healthy snack to eat at break time.

PE Days

Children should always have a full PE kit in school every day as we sometimes take the opportunity to do PE on any day. Current regular PE days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (varying in different terms). Year 3s will be swimming later in the school year.

PE kit is black shorts, white T shirt and daps, and socks if children are wearing tights. As the weather gets colder, children may use jogging bottoms rather than shorts for outdoor PE.

Coats and sweatshirts/cardigans

Children love to work out of the classroom, and we like to get outside as much as possible. Please can your child bring a waterproof coat or jacket to school every day except in a blazing summer heatwave. Please make sure all clothes are clearly labelled with your child’s first and last names to help us return stray clothes to their owners.

A positive attitude to learning - It will make a lot of difference!

Parents and carers are very welcome to talk to me after school. You can ask any day; if I have a meeting we can plan another time.
