Haydon Wick Primary School For Parents

Meerkats (Year 3)

Hello and a warm welcome from Mrs Oakley and Mrs Cowley

The class teachers are Mrs Oakley (Mondays and Tuesdays) and Mrs Cowley (Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays). Mrs Dolisznyj is our Teaching Assistant.

Topics we will be covering this year

  • Term 1 & 2 – The magical world of plants and animals (Harry Potter)
  • Term 3 & 4 – Ancient Egypt (Dress up day likely)
  • Term 5 & 6 – ‘A journey of a thousand miles, begins with a single step’ (Geography)

Homework

Your child will be given a ‘pick and mix’ homework each term which will be related to our current topic. They should choose at least one activity as well as completing their reading and times tables / spelling practice. Completed homework will be shared and celebrated with parents in the classroom at the end of each term. Homework can be accessed on the Class updates page.

Reading

All the children have a school reading book and reading log in their book bag. Please try to read with your child regularly even if your child is a fluent reader and support him/her by asking questions to deepen their understanding of the texts. Please make comments about their reading in their journals to show they have been reading regularly at home – if possible about 4 times per week.

Spellings

There will be spellings to learn most weeks, tested on Mondays. The words to learn will be stuck in the front of the book, with the tests at the back. Please ensure your child has their spelling book in school on Mondays. They may practise their spellings as they wish.

Maths

Your child will be given a particular times table to work on and will be tested in a variety of ways in school. Once they have mastered that table, they will be given another and finally move on to mixed grids. Any form of practise (online games, songs, verbal) will help them to feel confident.

What will you need in Meerkats class

PE Days

Our PE days are usually Tuesday and Thursday but may change so please can you ensure your child’s PE kit is in school every day. Also, please make sure all your clothes and PE kits are named clearly.

Equipment

Children should have a named water bottle in school each day. They do not need stationery or pencil cases as we provide all that they need.

Feel free to pop in with an urgent message before or after school but please make an appointment via the office if you require a longer discussion – we are always happy to meet in order to ensure your children are happy and achieving.
