One term in, and the new Hedgehogs class members have been getting to know each other, their new classroom and the adults who work in Hedgehog class. Some serious learning has begun too.
A lot of our topic work has been based around the life and experiences of Charles Darwin; we also collected and examined, recorded and thought about what we found. We looked for plants that we could identify with our identikits, leaves, parts of plants we could press and seeds that we could plant. Most people had a shoot or two in their pots by the end of term. Further games and activities can be found at http://www.greatplanthunt.org/
The animal part of the topic was reinforced by our class visit to the delightful Goatacre Farm. The children were able to get very close to the animals in a very gentle way. It was lovely being the only visitors as the farm was reserved for us that day. A big thank you is owed to Mrs Peachey who drove the minibus backwards and forwards several times to help keep the cost down.
Y3s have also had the opportunity to improve their skills at riding a scooter and swimming, both of which could save their lives one day!
We shared with the older classes in the school in watching ‘Journey to the Centre of the Brain,’ A drama which taught how we learn. Follow up videos are available at http://worldinsideme.co.uk/
We have enjoyed visits from experts who have told us about their experiences of the values of Patience and Peace in their own lives, and enjoyed listening to Canon Adams at Harvest Festival.
Homework has begun, with regular reading, spelling, mental maths and now online maths games. These have been popular with the children; they can earn ‘coins’ by completing games and spend them how they wish within the website. You will need to log-on to https://www.activelearnprimary.co.uk/login?c=0 . You will need your username, password and the school code. Please ask me if you have forgotten these.
We are looking forward to a short break now and then all the excitement of the term that leads up to Christmas.
