Reading

All children will have a school reading book and reading record to take home. Please try to read with your child regularly even if your child is a fluent reader. You can support them by asking questions to deepen their understanding of the texts. Please make comments about their reading in their reading record to show they have been reading regularly at home – if possible, 4 times per week. We appreciate your support with helping your child develop their reading skills!

Spellings

Common exception words for Year 1 and 2 are stuck in the front of spelling books. These are words that your child has already learnt, but can continue to revisit if necessary. Year 3/4 Statutory words will also be stuck in the book. These words are covered throughout the year as part of our spelling scheme on Purple Mash. Purple Mash spellings will usually focus on spelling patterns/rules. A Purple Mash spelling overview for the term will be stuck in spelling books.

A Dojo post will be made on a Friday detailing which spellings we will be learning the following week. These will then be introduced in class on a Monday during one of our spelling sessions and we will complete spelling activities in class throughout the week. 2/3 attempts of each word should be recorded in the home spelling book throughout the week. Tests will then be completed in class on a Friday (there will also be tests available on your child’s Purple Mash account each week if you wish to do these at home as well).

Please try to ensure your child has their reading record and spelling book in their plastic folder in their bag at school every day!

Homework

Your child will be given a ‘Pick and Mix’ homework sheet each term which will be related to our current topic. They should choose at least one activity to do as well as completing their reading and TTRS/spellings. Completed homework will be shared and celebrated in class or via Dojo at the end of each term. There is an expectation of 20 minutes per week on TTRS. There will be a weekly lunch time club to attend if your child requires (or would like!) the time in school to boost their learning.

PE

Our PE days are Wednesday and Thursday – please ensure your child a full and correct PE kit on this day. Please make sure all clothes and PE kits are named clearly. For safety, children need to remove their earrings for PE. If your child cannot remove earrings by themselves, please provide tape/plasters to cover them. If your child does not have the correct PE kit or is unable to remove their earrings, they will not be able to take part in PE. Thank you for your understanding.

We also politely request that children do not bring pencil cases into school. The children will be provided with everything they need during lessons.

We look forward to a wonderful year!
