Student Council
At Haydon Wick Primary School, we feel it is very important for children to have an awareness of their rights and their responsibilities as members of both the school and the wider community. In order to give pupils a voice within the school, every year one child from each class is elected, by their peers, to become representatives on the school council.
Members of the school council are expected to show the highest standard of behaviour and attitude in and out of school, in order to act as role models to other children. They also get the chance to meet with adults within the school to voice their opinions and ideas to keep the school moving forward.
Respecting Rights at Haydon Wick
The Rights Respecting Schools award has been set up to create safe and inspiring places to learn where children are respected, their talents are nurtured, and they are able to thrive. Currently, we have achieved our ROC (Recognition of Commitment) at Haydon Wick Primary School. Our Rights Respecting Council are working hard on our journey to gain our Rights Respecting Award Level 1. There are 4 key areas of impact: wellbeing, participation, relationships, and self-esteem.
Children’s rights are at the heart of our school ethos. We follow our motto: ‘Working together and playing together’. This supports Article 28: “You have the right to a good-quality education” as well as Article 31: “You have the right to play and rest”. We are a values-based school, which supports our moral understanding. The children are learning their responsibilities to ensure they all receive their rights. It has a positive impact on the whole school community.
The Rights Respecting Council is helping to raise awareness of the rights of children through assemblies and helping to organise charity events. This year, we celebrated ‘Day for Change’ with great success. The children and parents of Haydon Wick Primary School were incredibly generous, and we created a gigantic copper trail. We all dressed in blue and white and worked on rights-respecting activities. Thank you to everyone for their incredible support.
Haydon Wick Class Charters
Each class created a fantastic charter at the start of the year which all the children have signed. They discussed their rights in school and how they could make sure everyone has their rights met through understanding their responsibilities. Then, as a class team, they decided which articles of the convention were the most important to their class.
